I have a Sony XDR-S3HD radio, and have thought about doing some mods to allow remote usage of the rig. Is this even possible, or is the S3HD too far removed from the F1HD?

The external IR remote control transmitter method of controlling the F1 would probably work on the S3 too. You'd need a PC, Seeeduino board, and the software that drives it.

If the S3 uses the same protocol, you could simply replay the same IR codes using your setup, and it should work just like the original https://infinitecraftrecipes.io remote. If not, you may need to analyze the IR signals and adjust them accordingly.
