Thursday, 17-Feb-11 19:31:18 GMTI think it might be interesting to show you some info about my node (704): Ulft - fm (the Netherlands)
Front view of the Sony XDR-F1HD tuner next to the cabinet with the powersupply arduino board and lcd:
http://www.uploadarchief.net/files/download/front_view.jpg
Inside the Sony you can see the modifications:
http://www.uploadarchief.net/files/download/inside_xdr.jpg
-Removed the 120volt powersupply
-Added the treble and de-emphasis correction (75us->50us)
-Added the battery memory backup
-Added a small fan
Inside the small box next to the xdr you can find this:
http://www.uploadarchief.net/files/download/inside_cabinet.jpg
-An Arduino Duemilanove board
-Power supply for -10v, +10.5v, and +5.2V
-A extra pic-processor to count 30 minutes to sleep and wake up the tuner
-A solid state relay to power up everything after wake up
-A lcd to show PI, signal strength and max signal strength.
I decided to add this timer function to extend the lifetime of the xdr-tuner and to reduce power consumption a little bit.
And the last picture:
The 3,5" fanless Single Board Computer mounted underneath my workingtable.
A Avalue ECM-3610 @ 666 MHz with onboard soundcard.
URadioserver and XDR manager are running with XP on this small board.

Thursday, 17-Feb-11 22:26:06 GMTHi Astra,
Nice of you to share the mods. If I can remember the XDR microprocessor supports 50 KHz steps, despite Sony not using this feature. Are u aware of any mods to activate the 50KHz step?
Also any way one can get the equivalent of an IF output?
We really are attempting to make a consumer grade radio into something that it isn't designed to be (hobby radio), but haven't yet come across any helpful Hex info yet.

Tim

The relay and timer function is a great idea. Will be interested to know how it wake up.
You could have made the timer with he arduino card. I'M sure the cpu is not maxed out and have some free clock cycle for a timer.

A gentle reminder regarding 50 kHz-step and IF output mods?
Would you be aware (know) of any?

Sunday, 20-Feb-11 12:26:03 GMTThis is my first project using the arduino board and the programming language which belong to this board... I modified the original globaltuner arduino software written by F4CMB a little bit to add the display and the timer function. In this software timer0 interrupts are disabled. So delay and millis don't work anymore. I tried to implemnt the 30 minutes timer in the arduino board with no succes. So, I followed the easy way and made a timer in a 16f628 pic next to the arduino.
The XDR tuner wakes up after any IR command communicated from the xdr-manager software to the arduino board.
@Calico: I'm sorry, I've no idea about the 50KHz step and IF output mods.
Regarda, Astra

Sunday, 20-Mar-11 20:29:03 GMTA little update on the installation of my new FM-DX set-up.
Totday I finished the renovation of the complete shack in my house.
At the same time I included the Sony XDR-F1HD to the desk.
This radio has now been modified to run on 12V and has a build-in fan inserted.
In the future it will also get the memory battery modification.
Due to the good weather I decided to install my good old 7el Triax on the mast next to the chimney.
In the shack the Low noise preamp was inserted into the system to give it a test.
During the last two days (with condx) I managed to receive stations as far as up to 350KM.
Receiver selectivity is fabulous! Amazing how easily strong nearby stations at just 100KHz away are filtered out.
Great receiver I must say!!
A "few" more things on the list to be done:
** getting the receiver online with the Arduino kit.
** The installation of the stack of two Korner 15.11 in my mast in the garden.
** The Triax will become the "phase" antenna together with the Bolin phaser box.
A question: is there anybody using a electronic logbook?

Sunday, 20-Mar-11 22:17:00 GMTDid you ever get the basic PDF guide to use the arduino with the XDR-F1HD? if not I can send it to you. I may include RDS modification if you need it.
I hope I have picture of RDS modification somewhere.
